Environmentally Friendly

Opt to package with glass for its eco-friendly benefits. Glass is 100% recyclable and can be recycled endlessly without any loss in purity or quality. In order to use less energy and fewer raw materials, 80% of recycled glass in the US is used to make new products. The turn around time to make these new products may be much quicker than expected. It can take as little as 30 days from the time the used glass goes into a recycling bin, until it is on the store shelf as an entirely new product. ^[1]

Consumer Preference

Glass packaging has many features that make it favorable for consumers. Packaging with glass containers keeps products fresh for long periods of time, making additives and preservatives unnecessary. The convenience of glass may also play a role in consumer preference. Glass food containers are microwave safe and reusable. The Glass Packaging Institute conducted a survey showing that although consumers buy products in a variety of packaging materials, they choose glass when it comes to the quality, purity, taste, product protection and shelf life. This survey yielded the following information ^[2]:

• 82% say glass keeps food in its healthiest form
• 78% say glass preserves the purity of its contents
• 75% say glass preserves the flavor of its contents
• 73% say glass preserves the quality of the product
• 62% say glass increases the shelf life of the product

Safe for Food and Beverage Storage

Glass is a great choice for beverage or food storage because it is nonporous and impermeable. This means that there will be no chemical interaction between the product and its packaging. Glass is the only packaging material that is labeled Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), meaning it is deemed safe for beverage and food storage under all circumstances. Glass is also comprised of all natural raw materials like sand, soda ash and limestone. With no harmful chemicals added to glass, the packaging is left pure.

Clarity

It's no secret that most glass containers are transparent. So why is this a benefit? The number one reason is that clear packaging creates a shelf impact like no other packaging material. The clarity of the glass allows the customer to see the exact product being purchased as opposed to text, a photo, or an illustration on the packaging. This is particularly important when packaging goods for consumption, and helps to establish trust between a company and the customer.

Reuse or Recycle

Recycling glass is very important to the environment, as it saves raw materials and energy from being used. Consider reusing glass containers for DIY projects, organization or storage to help preserve the environment! Glass bottles and jars can be repurposed to store and organize items in your medicine cabinet, craft cabinet, work bench or kitchen! The clarity of glass makes the contents easy to identify, or you can always use some paint or decorative tape to add a little color. If there is no need for repurposing glass in your home or business, be sure to do the right thing and recycle. For every glass bottle you recycle, enough energy is saved to light a 100-watt light bulb for up to four hours.
