Do Frosted Glass Containers Offer the Same UV Protection as Colored Glass?

What the Frosting Process Actually Changes - and What It Doesn't

Frosted glass containers have a genuinely different look from clear glass, but it's worth knowing whether that change is purely cosmetic or whether it affects light protection the way amber or cobalt glass does. This page covers whether frosted glass offers real UV protection compared to colored glass. Shop our full range of frosted and colored glass bottles to compare options.

Comparing Frosted and Amber Glass Bottles

Frosting Is a Surface Treatment, Not a Tint

Frosted glass gets its matte, translucent appearance from a surface treatment - typically acid etching or sandblasting - applied to clear glass after it's formed. This process changes how light scatters as it passes through the surface, which is fundamentally different from colored glass like amber or cobalt, where light-absorbing compounds are mixed directly into the glass itself during melting.

What This Means for UV Protection

Because frosting only affects the surface texture and light scattering, not the glass's underlying chemical composition, it doesn't filter UV wavelengths the way true colored glass does. Frosted clear glass still allows most of the same UV and visible light spectrum through as untreated clear glass - the frosting diffuses and softens how that light passes through, but it doesn't meaningfully block it the way amber or cobalt glass's light-absorbing compounds do. See our deep dive on amber glass and UV protection for a closer look at how that light-filtering actually works.

Frosted Colored Glass Combines Both

Some of our glass bottles combine both treatments - frosted amber or frosted cobalt glass - giving you the genuine UV-filtering properties of the colored glass along with frosting's softer, matte surface appearance. If UV protection is a real requirement for your formula, the color of the glass is what's doing that work, not whether it's also frosted.

Choosing Based on Your Actual Priority

If your primary concern is protecting a light-sensitive formula, choose based on glass color first - amber or cobalt - and treat frosting as a separate aesthetic decision on top of that choice. If frosted clear glass appeals to you purely for its look and your formula isn't genuinely light-sensitive, that's a reasonable choice on its own merits, just not one that's providing UV protection.
