Why Amber and Cobalt Glass Work

Glass color is not just cosmetic. The pigments used to tint glass amber or cobalt blue are specifically effective at absorbing UV wavelengths before they can reach the liquid inside. Amber glass bottles have long been the standard in the essential oil industry because they block a very wide range of UV light while remaining inexpensive to produce at scale. Does Clear Glass Offer Any Protection?

Clear glass offers essentially no meaningful UV protection compared to amber or cobalt. It is a reasonable choice for products with a very short intended use window, or for oils that are already diluted into a carrier and stored away from direct light, but for pure, concentrated essential oils intended to be stored for weeks or months, clear glass allows ongoing light exposure that amber and cobalt are specifically designed to prevent.

Real-World Storage Tips

Even with a UV-protective bottle, where and how you store your oils still matters. Keep bottles away from direct sunlight and heat sources like stovetops or sunny windowsills, since heat accelerates degradation independently of light exposure.
