Does Switching to PCR Plastic Jars Affect Packaging Performance?

What Post-Consumer Recycled Resin Actually Changes - and What It Doesn't

Switching to post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic is one of the more accessible sustainability moves a brand can make, but it's reasonable to want to know whether it costs you anything in performance first. This page covers whether PCR plastic affects packaging performance compared to virgin resin, in genuinely practical terms. Browse our PCR jar options to see current availability.

What PCR Actually Means

PCR (post-consumer recycled) plastic is resin reclaimed from previously used plastic products - collected, cleaned, reprocessed, and remanufactured into new packaging - rather than manufactured fresh from raw petroleum feedstock. It's not the same as biodegradable or compostable plastic, and it doesn't change the base polymer type: a PCR PET jar is still PET, with the same fundamental chemical properties as its virgin-resin counterpart.

Where Performance Genuinely Can Differ

The most common real difference is visual, not functional: In clear containers, PCR resin can carry a slight tint or reduced clarity compared to virgin plastic, since the reclamation process doesn't always fully remove every trace of prior color or use. Structural performance - strength, barrier properties, chemical compatibility - is generally comparable to virgin resin of the same polymer type when the PCR content is sourced and processed to a genuine packaging-grade standard, though quality can vary more between PCR suppliers than it does across virgin resin suppliers.

What to Check Before You Switch to PCR

If performance matters critically for your specific product - a formula sensitive to trace contamination, or a product requiring maximum clarity for shelf presentation - request the same specifications you'd want for virgin resin: barrier data, compatibility testing results, and clarity samples from the actual PCR lot you'd be ordering, not a general claim about PCR performance. Testing your actual formula in your actual container, PCR or virgin, before committing to a full production run remains good practice regardless of material source.

Where PCR Makes the Most Sense

PCR plastic tends to be the easiest switch for products where clarity isn't the primary selling point or where a natural, slightly less pristine look actually supports a brand's sustainability positioning rather than working against it. Many brands specifically lean into a PCR container's slightly different appearance as part of their sustainability story rather than trying to hide it. For most packaging applications, PCR plastic performs comparably to virgin resin structurally, with the main real difference showing up in clarity and tint rather than strength or barrier properties.
