In the United States, the Poison Prevention Packaging Act (PPPA) requires child-resistant packaging for certain specific household substances, and a small number of essential oil constituents fall under this requirement. Oils high in methyl salicylate, such as wintergreen oil, are a well-known example, since methyl salicylate is regulated similarly to aspirin due to its toxicity risk in small children if ingested in concentrated form. If you are selling an oil or blend that falls into one of these regulated categories, a compliant child-resistant cap is not optional, it is a legal requirement.

Beyond What Is Required

For the large majority of essential oils that are not specifically regulated under the PPPA, the decision to use a child-resistant cap comes down to good judgment rather than legal obligation. Many essential oils are still genuinely harmful if a small child manages to open a bottle and ingest even a small amount, and a child-resistant dropper bottle is a low-cost way to add a real layer of protection regardless of whether it is strictly mandated for your specific product.

Child-Resistant vs. Tamper-Evident: Not the Same Thing

It is worth being clear that these are two different features. A tamper-evident cap shows visible evidence if a bottle has already been opened, which builds trust with retail customers. A child-resistant cap uses a mechanism, such as a push-and-turn design, that is specifically difficult for young children to operate. A cap can be one, both, or neither, so if safety is a priority for your product, check specifically for child-resistant functionality rather than assuming a tamper-evident seal provides the same protection.

Making the Right Call for Your Product
