What is a Heat Gun Used For?

Heat guns quickly and easily mold shrink bands to create a tamper-evident seal for glass and plastic bottles, metal containers, plastic and glass jars, and more. Below, we explain what shrink bands are, why using a heat gun is better than a household hairdryer, and provide specifications on the heat gun we currently sell.

Add Shrink Bands to Your Packaging for Tamper Evidence

Shrink bands are composed of 2 mil thick PVC, available in clear and various colors to match your branding needs. PVC offers grease, oil, and acid resistance, oxygen barriers, has a high melting point without loss of integrity, and can maintain its shape after sealing. When looking for a tamper-evident seal, colored and clear shrink bands are highly versatile, cost-effective.

SKS has an expansive inventory of shrink bands to pair with lip balm tubes, plastic bottles, glass jars, metal tins, and more. The easiest way to purchase shrink bands is to select a container and click Add-ons for a drop-down menu of compatible options. You can also view the shrink band compatibility chart and product spotlight to learn how to match shrink bands to your packaging.

Purchase a Heat Gun to Make Shrink Band Application Easy

SKS offers a heat gun with a durable carrying case and attachments to make molding shrink bands even easier. The heat gun is packaged with four specialized nozzle attachments, a small and large heat spreader, a shrink tubing attachment, and an air reducer attachment. These attachments allow the sealing of containers, from lip balm tubes to wide glass jars, by directing the heat needed for smooth application.

  • Heat Gun Specifications:
  • Airflow/fan speeds: 5-9 CFM
  • Temperature: Variable dial, 110° F to 930° F
  • Three-position slide switch: off, low, high
  • Rounded, ergonomic handle

Applying shrink bands with heat guns is straightforward and takes minimal time and effort. First, fill the containers and close them with the selected closures. Slip the shrink band around the neck of the container and simply begin shrinking by pulling the heat gun's trigger and slowly waving the nozzle back and forth for an even seal. Heat Guns Versus Hairdryers for Shrink Band Application

Many people wonder when using shrink bands, "Can't I just use a hairdryer?" Heat guns are constructed specifically for commercial applications, which means heat guns will perform better than a hairdryer for this process.

Hairdryers dispense gentle heat that is designed to dry hair without causing damage to the scalp. Heat guns are built to apply high, direct heat to melt plastic quickly. Since hairdryers do not get as hot as heat guns, sealing shrink bands will take longer and may result in an inconsistent look.

Hairdryers are not built for continual use, so repetitive long-term use can reduce performance and quality of the hairdryer. Heat guns have long-term performance in mind, so you will experience the same quality from beginning to end, while sealing a large batch of colored and clear shrink bands.
