Packaging for Spirits

October 2016

SKS Bottle & Packaging carries a large collection of bottles that could be used to package products for home distilling, fermenting, and brewing. Here are some examples of the growing SKS inventory of bottles and closures that could be used to house products like liquor, bitters, and much more!

Clear Glass Liquor Bottle

SKS recently added a new 1-liter bottle. This new addition could work for use as a liquor or wine bottle. The clear glass liquor bottles can be purchased with black polypropylene tamper evident caps that feature a frangible ring attached to the bottom of the cap skirt. This ring will break away from the cap when it is secured to the bottle properly, and remain on the bottle when the cap is removed. Tamper evidence is an important feature to consider when packaging food or beverages, as it allows customers to identify if the product has been opened prior to purchasing and consuming.

Clear Glass Bar Top Bottles

Opt for the clear glass bar top bottles for liquor packaging that is sure to stand out on the shelves! Choose from 375 ml bottles or 750 ml bottles available in this style, both a good option for a unique spin on the average liquor bottle packaging. Both sizes feature neck finishes that are compatible with traditional cork stoppers, round bar top cork stoppers, and black ribbed bar top cork stoppers. The corks to fit the 375 ml bottles are made of natural cork, while the corks to fit the 750 ml bottles are available in both natural, and colmated cork. Colmated cork is natural cork that has been sealed with an FDA approved adhesive agent to fill the pores.

Clear Glass Woozy Bottles

SKS offers various sizes of clear glass woozy bottles, making it easy to package an entire line of spirits. They are available in 1.7 oz, 5 oz, 8 oz, and 12 oz sizes. These woozy bottles can be paired with cork stoppers, aluminum caps, black ribbed caps, red ribbed caps, gold ribbed caps, white ribbed caps, black metal caps, white metal caps. The larger sizes of woozy bottles could be a good option for packaging premixed cocktails or wine. The smaller bottles may be suitable for bitters or single servings, a convenient option for mini bars or to serve on airplanes. To make any of these woozy bottles tamper evident, pair them with compatible shrink bands, available in a variety of sizes and colors.

Clear Glass Stout Bottles

Glass stout bottles are offered in 12 oz and 16 oz sizes. Both sizes have a 38/405 neck finish which is compatible with black ribbed caps, white ribbed caps, aluminum caps, black metal caps, white metal caps and smooth black induction lined dispensing caps. These bottles also feature large label panels, perfect for branding your product with a custom label. Since tamper evidence is always important to consider when packaging beverages, be sure to consider shrink bands or induction lined caps with these bottles.

Packaging for Smaller Portions

In addition to the 1.7 oz woozy bottles, SKS stocks other options for packaging smaller portions and samples. The clear PET nip bottles are compatible with black polypropylene tamper evident closures. These 50 ml liquor bottles could be great for packaging single serving sizes of spirits. SKS also offers clear PET flasks that can be paired with black ribbed caps with PE liners. PE liners are great general purpose liners that will create a stable seal, and have good chemical resistance. This flask has a 100 ml capacity and could be great for packaging smaller portions of product.

Packaging Tip

Clear Glass Dairy Bottles

Try packaging a variety of products in SKS’ new clear glass dairy bottles. These bottles could be a great option to house milk or cream. These 16 oz bottles can be paired with white or black tamper evident closures. Tamper evidence is an important option to consider when packaging food or beverage products. This allows customers to identify if the product has been opened prior to purchasing or consuming. Once these caps are properly applied to the dairy bottles, the ring attached to the caps will remain on the bottle, and cannot be reattached.

Know Your Product Packaging

It is important to select the right type of plastic for packaging your product. Characteristics vary between types of plastics, an example being; acid resistance and heat resistance. Many products like lip balms, deodorant, or beverages can be hot filled, knowing the maximum fill temperature of the packaging is crucial. Polypropylene and polyethylene both have high heat and acid resistance. Polypropylene has great heat resistance and can withstand being filled with products up to 275 °F, while HDPE can withstand 248 °F. LDPE has maximum fill temperature of 176 °F and is not as hard, stiff, or strong in comparison to HDPE. PET is a great packaging material as it is a good barrier to gas and moisture, and has good resistance to heat with a maximum fill temperature of 160 °F. Another common plastic used for packaging is polystyrene, which can be used with weak acids and alcohols, and has a maximum fill temperature of 194 °F. PVC could be a good option for packaging many products as it has a high chemical resistance and maximum fill temperature of 158 °F. Be sure to be aware of the maximum fill temperatures and acid resistance of your container to ensure compatibility when packaging your product!
