Heat Gun Terms
Heat: The form of kinetic energy, which causes a rise in temperature in a body as it is absorbed, or a reduction in temperature as it is lost to the environment.
Temperature Differential: the driving force of heat energy. The greater the temperature differential between two objects the greater the flow of heat energy from the higher temperature object to the cooler object.
BTU: (British Thermal Units) or calories are the units used to measure heat energy. One BTU is equivalent to 252 calories.
Thermal Conductivity: The property of a material related to its ability to transfer heat though itself. The higher the thermal conductivity of a material, the great the heat transfer rate. In general, metals have higher thermal conductivities than isolators. Copper and aluminum have higher thermal conductivities than steel, while steel has a higher thermal conductivity then wood of plastics.
Heat Transfer Rate: The quantity of heat energy flowing per unit of time through an object. It can be measured in BTU’s per minute or by calories per second flowing through a specified area of the object.
Wattage: A measure of the power of the heat gun.
Main Control Switch: Mounted on the front of the pistol grip. It is a rocker switch with a high, low and off setting options.
Flat Nozzle: Used for spreading the hot air over a wider narrower area.
Common Modes of Heat Transfer:

Convection: employing a heated fluid such as air to convey heat from the source to the object being heated .A heat gun is an example of applied convection.

Conduction: heat transfer
within an object. Ultra torches, in the soldering mode, are an
example of applied conduction.

Radiation: heat transfer employing electromagnetic waves similar to light or radio waves. This method does not require the presence of solids, liquids or gases to transmit heat energy. The sun is the best example of radiant heat.
Heat Gun Safety:
Never obstruct or cover the air inlet grills. If the air flow is reduced the heat gun will overheat and possibility of catching fire.
Never touch the hot metal nozzle with clothing or skin.
Do Not look down the heat gun nozzle while the gun is turned on.
Do Not insert anything down the nozzle of the heat gun.
Do not use a heat gun near inflammable materials.
To Reduce the risk of fire or electric shock, do not expose heat guns to rain or moisture. Store indoors. Connect to grounded outlets only.
Always switch the tool off before putting it down on any surface.
Always allow the heat gun to fully cool off before storing it.
